Update of Name on Hong Kong Identity Card (HKID)

OVERVIEW

From submission of application form to the Immigration Deparrment (ImmD), to collection of a new HKID, it may take in total 1-2 months.

 

Total costs of deed poll &
updating HKID + HKSAR passport (48 pages) + Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents (Home Return Permit):

HKD 500 +

HKD 460 + HKD 520 + HKD 590

= HKD 2,070

Generally, each record or document can be updated after producing your new HKID. A deed poll may also be required.

(One may update their name and gender marker in a single application, attaching the documents to the same Form ROP73)

STEP 0:
VISIT A LAW FIRM FOR A DEED POLL

A deed poll is a legal document signed by the applicant in the presence of a lawyer. It s a self-declaration to abandon the use of the former name and to use the new name thereafter.
 

It is usually available during the same visit.

  • Fee: Around HKD 500 (Additional fee for a certified true copy)

  • One may register both Chinese and English names, or an English name only.

  • Both surname and given names can be updated. There is no legal requirement to use a parental surname.

  • No limit on the number of updates.

  • Chinese name: Maximum 6 characters in total.

  • English name: Maximum 40 characters (including spaces).

  • No restriction on the choice of words.

  • No punctuation mark or special character.

For individuals aged 11 or above, the name on a birth entry (birth certificate) cannot be updated.

For those below 18, the consent and signature of one parent or legal guardian are required to update a given name. The consent of both parents is required to update a surname.

STEP 1:
SUBMISSION FORM ROP73 TO IMMD

STEP 2:
RECEIPT OF CONFIRMATION PHONE CALL/EMAIL/LETTER FROM IMMD

Around 1 month after the submission of all documents, a reply from ImmD would be usually received.

 

If all documents, are in order, and the application is approved, one would be instructed to visit ImmD in person, to produce original copy(ies) of the deed poll, and complete the relevant procedures.

STEP 3:
VISIT THE OFFICE OF IMMD IN PERSON

  • Producing original copy(ies) of the medical certificates.

  • (If the application is made with Criterion 2, signing the declaration on Annex 1 of ImmD' Guideline)

  

  • Taking new photo, and fingerprints

  • Returning the existing HKID for cancellation

  • Collecting Acknowledgement of Application for A Hong Kong Identity Card (Paper temporary HKID, see image)

STEP 3:
UPDATE OF HKSAR PASSPORT

At this visit of ImmD, bringing the existing passport for update.

  • Fee for updating information on HKSAR passport (16 years old or above, valid for 10 years).

    • Recommended to choose either HKD 430 (32 pages), or HKD 520 (48 pages).

    • If choosing the HKD 110 option, the new passport expires on the same date of the old passport, and one may be asked to produce their old passport during travels.

STEP 4:
COLLECTION OF NEW HKID

3-4 weeks after the first visit of ImmD, visiting ImmD again in person, to collect the new HKID, and HKSAR passport (if any).

UPDATE OF MAINLAND TRAVEL PERMIT FOR HONG KONG AND MACAU RESIDENTS (HOME RETURN PERMIT)

Make an appointment at the webpage of China Travel Service (Hong Kong) (Available in Chinese ONLY).

  • 登記預約 → 同意 →

    • 申請類別:更改換發《港澳居民來往內地通行證》

Visiting one of the branches of China Travel Service in person, bringing your new HKID, as well as producing the original copy(ies) of the deed poll.
